Look Book: Demi Lovato Goes Bold for ‘Neon Lights’

Demi Lovato has released the video for her newest single “Neon Lights.” She uses the song title to drive the visual and make-up artist Jill Powell brought the look to life. CocoPerez.com got Jill to dish on the looks so now we can all give it a try.

Look 1: Kissed by Water

“For the water scenes we wanted beautiful skin, very natural makeup while sill being glamourous. To do this and make her skin look wet, I used 3 different foundation colors to create dimension. I used a waterproof mascara on her eyes and concealer to contour her eyes naturally. I set everything with powder, bronzer and highlighter to make sure it stayed well in the water. To finish the look and make her skin look wet, I massaged Argan Oil into my palms and pressed it onto her face. This made it look like she had no makeup on but perfect glowing, wet skin. A little secret- Demi had the idea to do blue eyebrows to add a little something to the look and match her blue hair color. I loved it and since it was shot in a darker setting, it wasn’t extremely noticeable but was a fun added touch.” (Jill Powell)

Look 2: Glow In The Dark Face
“We wanted to keep it chic while having fun with black light sensitive makeup. Demi had pulled tons of inspirational images and I used these as a platform to create the look. I did an extreme winged liner using a combination of Wolfe Brothers cream makeup and Make Up For Ever Fluo Nite pigment.

I started out by creating the wing shaped liner with a while eye liner pencil to get the shape. I then used an angled brush and mixed Fluo Nite pigment with Make Up Forever Eye Seal to create a waterproof liquid solution. I used this on top of the white liner and finished the winged liner. To create the lip color I started by using white liner to fill in the shape of the lips and packed pink Fluo nite pigment on top. I used the Wolfe Brothers neon cream makeup to add a clean edge to the lips and also for under Demi’s eyes as eyeliner.” (Jill Powell)

“One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the makeup looked good under both lighting set ups. Since it was all shot at the same time I needed the makeup to be compatible in the black light set up as well as full lighting. I didn’t have any black lights in the makeup trailer so I didn’t see what it looked like under black light until we were on set ready to shoot the scenes. Any speck of pigment that fell showed up under black light so I had to be extremely precise with everything. But I think it turned out great!”

“My tip for removing specks of pigment or glitter that has fallen on the cheeks is to lightly press a piece of scotch tape to pick up the excess.” (Jill Powell)
